Learn how to build an arduino-compatible sonic ranging robot for only $40. Open hardware and software create insanely cool opportunities for makers these days. This presentation will discuss what “open” means in the context of hardware and software, and why this approach is important, especially in an educational setting. The parts you need to build the robot are available in a kit through Yourduino.com. The robot will serve as an example of a low cost open hardware kit coupled with an online wiki that has instructions and code for the robot that are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. The robot is fully customizable by tweaking its Arduino code or adding additional sensors. Building the robot and participating on the wiki are great ways for students to hone their 21st Century engineering skills, and practice social networking with a purpose.
